Access the Asia Treks highlights the need of understanding high altitude sickness, commonly known as acute mountain sickness (AMS), identifying its signs, and taking the necessary precautions.

Headache, lightheadedness, exhaustion, nausea, loss of appetite, shortness of breath, and trouble sleeping are just a few symptoms that may appear.

It results from the body’s difficulty adjusting to the change and is brought on by the lower oxygen levels at high elevations. Rest, drink plenty of water, and refrain from continuing your ascent if your symptoms are minor until acclimatization takes place.

It may be required to descend to lower elevations in extreme circumstances. Acclimatization can be aided by medications like acetazolamide, but these must be taken under medical care.

Before going on high-altitude treks, anyone with pre-existing medical concerns should speak with their doctor and the trek leaders.

High elevations can make conditions including cardiovascular disease, respiratory problems, anemia, diabetes, and epilepsy worse.

To ensure that the necessary safety precautions are taken, it is crucial to inform your trekking guide about your medical history prior to your departure date so that the necessary precautions can be taken in time.

Remedies

  • The key to preventing high altitude sickness is gradual acclimatization. Ascend gradually to give your body time to adjust to the higher altitude.
  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, and limit your intake of alcohol and caffeine.
  • To guarantee optimal nutrition and energy levels, have a balanced diet.
  • During the walk, getting enough rest and sleep is essential for acclimatization.
  • Lower your altitude if high altitude sickness symptoms increase or persist.
  • In an emergency, having a portable oxygen cylinder on hand can be helpful.

What is Diamox?

A typical medicine used in high altitude trekking is called Diamox (acetazolamide), and it is used to both prevent and cure the symptoms of acute mountain sickness (AMS). A prescription drug called Diamox aids with acclimatization at very high altitudes. It functions by boosting the kidneys’ excretion of bicarbonate, which causes the blood to become more acidic and promotes breathing, assisting the body’s adjustment to high altitudes.

Diamox usage and necessity

Before climbing to a high altitude, Diamox is taken only in the condition if it’s needed, and it is kept up for a few days until acclimatization is reached.

Depending on the individual, the altitude of the walk, and the advice of a medical practitioner, the amount and duration of Diamox may change.

To find the right dosage and method of administration for your particular requirements, you must speak with a healthcare professional who is educated about high altitude medicine. In addition to this, you must be clear about the Diamox dosage with the trek leaders where they can advise you according to the necessity.

Side Effects and Precautions:

Diamox may have negative effects, just like any medicine. Increased urination, tingling in the fingers and toes, changed taste perception, and minor gastrointestinal issues are among the most frequent adverse effects.

Allergic reactions and blood abnormalities are examples of uncommon yet dangerous adverse effects.

People who have a history of certain medical disorders, such as kidney or liver disease, or those who are known to be allergic to sulfa medications shouldn’t take Diamox.

Before starting Diamox, it’s important to tell your doctor about your medical history and any drugs you’re presently taking.
